Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lamb chops
Provide the main meat; searing browns the surface for savoury flavour.
Butter
Conducts heat in the pan and adds richness and browning.
Onions
Soften and turn golden, adding sweetness and depth to the dish.

The step that matters

Browning the lamb chops. Browning depends on a dry surface and enough space in the pan. Crowded or wet chops steam instead of browning, and they miss the Maillard browning that gives savoury flavour.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (lamb, pepper, butter):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Asparagusfits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against lamb, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
