Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Parsnips
Form the bulk of the stew and soften as they simmer, becoming sweet and tender.
Salt pork
Adds fat and savory flavor as it renders, seasoning the stew and the parsnips.
Dumplings
Steam on top of the stew, cooking through under the cover to form soft, bready pieces.

The step that matters

Cook without removing the cover. Lifting the lid lets steam escape, so the dumplings can dry out or cook unevenly. Keeping the cover on traps steam to cook them through.
