Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Split peas
Break down as they cook, thickening the soup and giving it a creamy body.
Beef bone
Releases savory flavor and gelatin into the water, adding depth and body to the broth.
Onions
Soften and turn sweet as they cook, building aroma and a savory base.
Carrot
Adds gentle sweetness and color as it softens in the broth.
Turnip
Contributes an earthy, slightly peppery flavor and soft texture as it cooks.

The step that matters

Ensure the soup does not burn.. Split peas are starchy and thicken as they cook, so they settle on the pot bottom and scorch easily. High heat or leaving the soup unattended can cause sticking and a burnt taste.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, onion, carrot, turnip, pepper):

  1. Beansfits better
  2. Lentilsfits better
  3. Chickpeafits better
  4. Peasthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, onion, carrot, turnip, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
