What each ingredient does

Beans
Form the main body of the dish, becoming tender through long gentle boiling.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth coating to the cooked beans.

The step that matters

Boil gently for 1 hour. Long, gentle simmering softens the fibrous pod walls until they are tender. A hard rolling boil can break the beans apart and leave them unevenly cooked.

Swap the beans

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Walnutfits about as well
  2. Black-eyed peafits about as well
  3. Almondfits about as well
  4. Beansthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
