Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Shin of beef
Simmers into the broth, giving it its meaty flavor and body.
Carrot
Adds natural sweetness and firm texture to the soup.
Potato
Softens as it cooks, adding body and starch to the broth.
Sweet potato
Breaks down slightly as it cooks, adding sweetness and thickness.
Beans
Hold their shape in the broth and add substance and protein-rich texture.
Tomato
Adds acidity and brightness to the broth.

The step that matters

Strain and degrease the broth before adding vegetables. Straining removes solids and skimming removes surface fat, so the broth stays clear and does not turn greasy. Adding vegetables after this keeps their flavor clean and their texture intact.
