Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cucumbers
Provide the bulk of the pickle and release water when grated and squeezed.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that gives the pickle its sharp, preserving tang.
Sugar
Balances the sharpness of the vinegar with a touch of sweetness.

The step that matters

Boil for about ten minutes. Boiling brings the mixture to a temperature high enough to help preserve it before bottling. Stopping early may leave it less stable on the shelf, so the timing matters.

Swap the cucumber

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vinegar, pepper, sugar):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Mustardfits better
  3. Cabbagefits about as well
  4. Cucumberthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against vinegar, pepper, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
