Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Powdered sugar
Dissolves into the butter to give the sauce its sweetness and smooth body.
Sweet butter
Creams with the sugar to form a light, spreadable sauce and adds richness.

The step that matters

Thin with boiling water gradually. Too much liquid at once can loosen the butter and sugar into a runny sauce that will not hold its light cream texture. Adding water a tablespoon at a time lets you stop at the right consistency.

Swap the lemon

The recipe marks lemon as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, butter, vanilla, nutmeg):

  1. Figfits better
  2. Coconutfits better
  3. Blueberryfits better
  4. Lemonthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, butter, vanilla, nutmeg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
