Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Clams
Provide the main flavor and texture of the soup.
Flour
Thickens the soup slightly when mixed smooth and stirred in.
Milk
Adds creaminess and mild sweetness to the broth.
Butter
Adds richness and a rounder, fuller flavor.

The step that matters

Adding the flour or cracker. Flour lumps unless it is first blended into cold milk to make a smooth cream before it goes into hot liquid. Starch then thickens evenly as the soup heats.
