Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the main protein; browning it first builds savoury flavour in the fat.
Potatoes
Soften during simmering and thicken the broth slightly as their starch releases.
Carrots
Add natural sweetness and hold their shape through long simmering.
Peas
Add a tender, sweet green element that cooks quickly at the end.

The step that matters

Adding the potatoes and peas at the right time. Potatoes need enough simmering to become tender, but overcooked peas turn dull and mushy. Adding canned peas late keeps their colour and texture.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, carrot, potato):

  1. Beansfits better
  2. Peanutfits better
  3. Sesamefits better
  4. Peasthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, carrot, potato. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
