Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Coats the steak so it browns well and helps form a savoury crust.
Onions
Soften and sweeten as they cook, forming a moist topping for the steak.
Beefsteak
Main protein; browning on the surface adds rich, savoury flavour.

The step that matters

Browning the steak in hot fat. Searing in hot fat creates a browned crust through the Maillard reaction, which builds savoury flavour. If the pan is not hot enough, the steak steams and turns grey instead of browning.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, flour):

  1. Arrowrootfits better
  2. Okrafits better
