Baked Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Prepare and bake sweet potatoes until soft, testing by gently pressing them.

  3. If the potatoes are old and watery, peel, parboil, and drain them.

Bake

  1. Place the potatoes in a baking pan with a little butter or beef dripping.

  2. Sprinkle with pepper and coarse sea salt, then bake until a fork easily pierces the largest potato.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sweet potatoes
Provide the starchy flesh that turns soft and sweet as it bakes.
Butter or beef dripping
Adds fat that carries flavour and helps the skins brown and feel rich.

The step that matters

Testing for doneness with a fork. Sweet potatoes can look done outside while the centre stays firm. Starch only becomes soft and creamy once it is fully cooked through, so testing the largest potato ensures even tenderness.

Swap the sweet potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Carrotfits better
  4. Sweet potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
