To Bake Pork and Beans Without Oven
Ingredients
Directions
Dig a trench 18 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 4 to 6 feet long.
Keep a fire in the trench for several hours until it dies down to a bed of coals and hot ashes.
Place the prepared beans in mess kettles and pour in 3 quarts of hot water.
Cover the kettles with a tin plate or mess pan.
Scrape out the embers until the kettle is near the bottom of the trench.
Cover the kettle first with ashes, then with coals, and leave undisturbed for 6 to 8 hours.
