Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main flavor and acidity of the soup.
Baking soda
Neutralizes some of the tomato acid so the milk is less likely to curdle.
Milk
Adds creaminess and a smooth, mellow body to the soup.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a rounder mouthfeel.
Rolled crackers
Absorb liquid and thicken the soup slightly as they sit.

The step that matters

Heat without boiling. Tomato acid can make milk curdle and separate when it gets too hot. Heating only until scalding, not boiling, keeps the soup smooth and creamy.

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (milk, butter, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
