Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Mashed potatoes give the soup its body and thickness.
Egg
Binds the mashed potato mixture, adding richness and some body to the soup.
Milk
Adds creaminess and softens the flavor of the soup.
Onion
Builds savory aroma and depth in the broth.

The step that matters

Bring to a boil before serving. Egg is mixed into the soup, and milk is added before this step. Heating the mixture to a boil cooks the egg through and helps the soup hold together, but overheating after the milk goes in can cause curdling or scorching.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, carrot, turnip, potato, egg, pepper, milk):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Celeryfits better
  3. Thymefits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, carrot, turnip, potato, egg, pepper, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
