What each ingredient does

Egg
Adds richness and helps bind the mashed potato into a smooth mixture.
Butter
Adds fat for richer flavour and a smoother, silkier mouthfeel.
Milk or cream
Adds liquid and creaminess, softening the mashed potato into a soup.
