Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Oysters
Provide the main flavor and tender texture; they cook quickly once added.
Milk
Forms the creamy body of the soup.
Butter and flour
Mixed together to thicken the soup as it boils.
Celery
Adds a mild, fresh vegetable flavor to the broth.
Oyster liquor
Serves as the flavorful broth base for the soup.

The step that matters

Adding the oysters. Oysters toughen and shrink when boiled too long, so they should be added near the end and cooked only a few minutes until their edges curl.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (oyster, milk, butter, flour, pepper):

  1. Nutmegfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Cinnamonfits better
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against oyster, milk, butter, flour, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
