Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Oysters
Provide the main protein and the seafood flavour at the centre of the salad.
Oil
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavour through the dressing and coating the oysters.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that brightens the dressing and balances the richness of the oil.
Fresh lettuce leaves
Provide a crisp, cool base that holds the oysters and dressing.

The step that matters

Cook the oysters for 1 minute. Oysters cook quickly. Heating them only until the edges firm and the flesh turns opaque sets the texture, while longer cooking toughens and dries them.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (oyster, vinegar, pepper):

  1. Cucumberfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Mustardfits better
  4. Lettucethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against oyster, vinegar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
