Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Butter a deep pie dish and sprinkle it thickly with fine bread crumbs.

  3. Layer sliced sour apples in the dish, seasoning each layer with sugar, bits of butter, and either cinnamon or nutmeg.

  4. Add layers of bread crumbs on top, finishing with a layer of bread crumbs dotted with lumps of butter.

  5. Pour a few tablespoons of cold water over the entire dish.

  6. Cover with a plate and bake for 45 minutes.

  7. Serve warm with sweet cream.
