Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a bowl, mix the sugar, flour, cold water, and baking powder.
For the custard, boil nearly 1 pint of milk.
In a separate bowl, mix corn starch with ½ cup of sweet milk.
Add the beaten eggs to the corn starch mixture, stirring briskly.
Add the mixture to the boiling milk and stir until thickened.
Remove from heat and stir in the butter until dissolved.
Flavor with vanilla and spread between the cakes while hot.
