Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  2. Let sit for 1 hour.

Assemble the biscuits

  1. Carefully split the shredded wheat biscuits in half.

  2. Heat them in a pan in the oven at 300°F (150°C).

  3. Lightly butter the biscuits.

  4. Moisten them with strawberry juice.

  5. Place in a baking dish.

  6. Add the strawberries on top.

  7. Cover.

  8. Return to the oven for 5 minutes.

Make the meringue and serve

  1. Beat the egg whites until stiff.

  2. Gradually add powdered sugar.

  3. Place on top of the strawberries.

  4. Put the dish in an open oven for 2 minutes to brown the meringue.

  5. Serve with cream.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Strawberries
Provide the main fruit flavour and moisture that soaks into the biscuits.
Shredded wheat biscuits
Form the absorbent base that soaks up strawberry juice and holds the fruit.
Egg whites
Whipped into a foam that sets into a light, crisp meringue topping when browned.
Sugar
Sweetens the strawberries and helps draw out their juice.
Powdered sugar
Stabilises the whipped egg whites and sweetens the meringue.

The step that matters

Browning the meringue. Egg whites must be beaten until stiff and the meringue watched closely in the open oven, because over-browning or a loose foam can scorch the topping or make it weep.

Swap the strawberry
