The flavor team

The pairs that carry this dish. Each one is judged two ways: how much their aromas overlap, and how often cooks already put them together.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sugar
Sweetens the ice and lowers its freezing point so it stays soft and scoopable.
Ripe grapes
Provide the main flavour, sweetness and juice that becomes the ice.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the grape flavour and balances the sugar.
Powdered sugar
Dissolves easily into the partly frozen mixture, adding sweetness with a smoother texture.

The step that matters

Stir in the powdered sugar when partly frozen. Adding sugar to a partly frozen mixture lets it dissolve evenly without the ice becoming grainy or overly hard. Stirring too early or too late changes the final texture.

Swap the grape

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, lemon):

  1. Orangefits better
  2. Limefits better
  3. Vanillafits better
  4. Grapethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, lemon. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
