Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Butter an earthen baking dish.

  2. Layer chopped apples at the bottom.

  3. Sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon, and a few bits of butter.

  4. Cover with fine bread crumbs.

  5. Repeat layers until the dish is full, finishing with a layer of bread crumbs on top.

  6. Cover the dish and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes.

  7. Remove the cover and bake until golden brown.

  8. Serve warm with a hard sauce of butter and sugar or a sweet liquid sauce.
