Green Peas

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Shell the peas just before cooking.

  2. Soak shelled peas in cold water for at least 1 hour if stale.

  3. Bring a kettle of salted water to a boil.

Cook and serve

  1. Add peas and boil slowly until tender; young peas take about 20 minutes, mature peas take about 40 minutes.

  2. Do not drain the water; leave just enough to serve with the peas.

  3. Add butter, salt, and pepper to taste, and serve hot.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fresh peas
Provide the main body and sweet flavor of the dish.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth coating that carries flavor.

The step that matters

Boil slowly until tender. Peas cook through gradually; boiling too hard can break them apart and toughen the skins, so a gentle simmer keeps them whole and tender.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper, sugar):

  1. Almondfits better
  2. Chestnutfits better
  3. Walnutfits better
  4. Peasthe original
