What each ingredient does

Lobster meat
Forms the main body of the salad, providing the sweet, firm texture that the dressing coats.
Lettuce
Provides crisp structure and a cool, fresh base that holds the filling.
Mayonnaise dressing
Adds richness and moisture, binding the lobster into a creamy filling.
Hard-boiled eggs
Add soft, mild richness and a contrasting texture to the salad.

The step that matters

Dry the lettuce before assembling. Any water left on the leaves thins the dressing and makes the leaves soggy, so the shells lose their crispness and structure.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (lobster, meat, vinegar, capers, egg):

  1. Mustardfits better
  2. Shallotfits better
  3. Horseradishfits about as well
  4. Lettucethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against lobster, meat, vinegar, capers, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
