Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a quick oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. In a large bowl, mix together the lard, eggs, sour milk, baking soda, vinegar, ginger, and nutmeg.

  3. Gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt to the mixture.

  4. Stir in the butter or lard and sweet milk until well combined.

  5. Roll out the dough as moist as possible and cut into desired shapes.

  6. Place the cookies on buttered pans about 4 inches apart.

  7. Bake in the preheated oven until golden.

  8. Let cool and frost with powdered sugar frosting.
