Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Figs
Provide the main body, sweetness and chewy texture of the paste.
Dates
Add sweetness and moisture, helping the mixture bind together.
Walnuts
Add crunch and richness that contrast with the soft fruit.
Powdered sugar
Keeps the paste from sticking to the board and adds a dry, sweet coating.

The step that matters

Grind the nuts, figs, and dates together. Fruit and nuts must be finely and evenly ground so the paste holds together when rolled and cut. Uneven pieces crumble and make the squares fragile.
