Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Dried peas
Form the body of the soup as they cook down and thicken the liquid.
Onions
Add savory sweetness and aroma as they soften in the broth.
Celery
Contributes aromatic flavor to the base as it simmers.
Turnips
Add mild sweetness and body to the simmering vegetables.
Cold butter
Stirred in at the end to add richness and a silky mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Add more water if the soup becomes too thick. Dried peas keep absorbing liquid and thickening during the long boil. Adding water keeps the soup at the right consistency and prevents scorching on the bottom of the pot.
