What each ingredient does

Rhubarb
Provides the tart flavor and pectin-rich fibers that soften and break down into the sauce.
Sugar
Adds sweetness, balances rhubarb's tartness, and draws out juice to form a syrup.

The step that matters

Let it slowly simmer without stirring until done.. Gentle, low heat softens the rhubarb evenly without scorching the sugar. Stirring breaks the pieces down unevenly and can make the sauce cloudy or mushy, so the pieces should be left to cook through on their own.
