Apple Charlotte

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the filling

  1. Pare, core, and cut the apples into pieces.

  2. Cook the apples with 1 cup of water until soft.

  3. Add the washed currants, sultanas, cinnamon, almonds, and sugar to the cooked apples.

Assemble and bake

  1. Cut thin slices of bread and butter them.

  2. Line a buttered pie dish with the buttered bread.

  3. Layer the apple mixture over the bread, then repeat layers until the dish is full, finishing with a layer of bread and butter.

  4. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cooking apples
Softened into a fruit base that gives the charlotte its bulk and moisture.
Allinson wholemeal bread
Forms the structural layers that hold the apple filling together as it bakes.
Butter
Coats the bread so it crisps and browns in the oven and adds richness.
Currants and sultanas
Add concentrated sweetness and chewy texture among the soft apple.
Almonds
Add nutty flavour and a bit of texture to the filling.

The step that matters

Cook the apples until soft. Apples that stay firm release less water and leave gaps, while fully softened apples pack into a cohesive filling that holds its shape when sliced.

Swap the currant

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (apple, cinnamon, almond, sugar, bread, butter):

  1. Vanillafits better
