Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main body, flavour and acidity of the soup.
Onions
Browning in butter builds a sweeter, deeper savoury base for the soup.
Butter
Carries the onions as they brown and adds richness to the soup.
Vermicelli
Softens in the broth, adding body and a light starchy texture.

The step that matters

Drain without rubbing anything through. Pressing the solids through the sieve pushes pulp and fine particles into the liquid, making the soup cloudy and thicker than intended. Letting the liquid drain naturally keeps it clear and smooth.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, butter, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
