Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Provide the main vegetable body, sweetness and colour of the soup.
Breadcrumbs
Thicken the soup and give it a smoother, more body-filled texture.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, carrying flavour through the soup.
Celery
Adds savoury, aromatic flavour to the vegetable base.
Onion
Adds savoury depth and aroma as it softens in the soup.

The step that matters

Rubbing the mixture through a sieve. Pushing the cooked vegetables and breadcrumbs through a sieve breaks them into a smooth purée. Leaving lumps or skipping this step leaves the soup coarse in texture.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (carrot, celery, onion, turnip, butter, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Marjoramfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against carrot, celery, onion, turnip, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
