An Excellent Family Syrup

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Boil buckthorn berries in water until all strength is extracted.

  2. Strain and press the berries hard.

  3. Add 1 pint of molasses to the same quantity of juice.

  4. Simmer until scum rises, removing it as it appears.

  5. When scum stops rising, stir well and store for use.

  6. If warm weather, add enough gin or brandy to prevent souring.

  7. For adults, a large teaspoonful is a dose; steep carraway seeds if griping occurs.
