Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Apples
Cooked into a sauce that forms the moist, flavorful filling of the pudding.
Bread crumbs
Fried in butter to form a crisp, browned lining and topping that holds the filling.
Eggs
Bind the cooled apple mixture so it sets firm enough to turn out of the mold.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, and helps the fried crumbs brown.
Sugar
Sweetens the apples and balances their natural tartness.

The step that matters

Mix in the eggs only when the apple mixture is cold. Beaten eggs added to a hot mixture can scramble or cook unevenly, while cooled apples let the eggs blend smoothly and set evenly during baking.

Swap the apple

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, butter, bread, egg):

  1. Vanillafits better
