Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main body, flavour and liquid of the soup.
Onions
Add savoury sweetness and depth as they stew down with the tomatoes.
Flour
Thickens the strained juice so the soup becomes smoother and fuller.
Cottolene
Adds fat, giving the soup a richer mouthfeel and carrying flavour.

The step that matters

Stewing and straining the tomato and onion mixture. Stewing softens the vegetables so their juices release, and straining through a sieve removes solids and seeds for a smooth texture. Skipping the full stew leaves the soup thin and rough-textured.
