Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide starch and body, thickening the soup as they are mashed smooth.
Milk
Forms the liquid base and gives the soup its creamy richness.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, and combines with flour to help thicken the milk.
Flour
Thickens the soup when cooked with butter and milk, giving a smooth body.

The step that matters

Add the butter and flour creamed together to the milk. Flour must be fully blended into the butter and then dispersed evenly in the milk. Lumps form if it is added loose, and the soup will be uneven in texture.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, milk, onion, pepper, butter, flour):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Garlicfits better
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, milk, onion, pepper, butter, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
