Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Oatmeal
Its starch thickens the water into a smooth, porridge-like gruel as it cooks.
Thin cream
Adds fat and richness, softening the flavor and texture of the gruel when mixed in.
Salt
Seasons the cooking water so the oatmeal gruel tastes less flat.

Swap the nutmeg

The recipe marks nutmeg as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, cream):

  1. Nutmegthe original
  2. Cinnamonfits about as well
  3. Gingerfits less well
  4. Peppermintfits less well
