Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point. The book gives no cooking times either; the times in the steps were added in transcription, so check for doneness rather than trusting the clock.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.

  3. Dissolve the baking soda in ½ cup of the milk and set aside.

  4. Dissolve the corn starch in the remaining milk.

  5. Add the corn starch mixture to the creamed sugar and butter, mixing well.

  6. Gradually add the beaten egg whites and flour, alternating with the milk and baking soda mixture.

  7. Mix until just combined, then pour into a prepared cake pan.

  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
