Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Fill a baking dish halfway with sliced apples.

  3. Dip dry bread in cold water, squeeze it dry, and layer it over the apples to a depth of at least 1 inch.

  4. Add a little water, then sprinkle with sugar and nutmeg, and dot with generous pieces of butter.

  5. Bake until the apples begin to brown on the bottom and the top is crisp.

  6. Serve with cream and sugar.
