Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Soup bone and meat
Provides the savory flavor and body of the broth as it simmers.
Onions
Browned in butter, they add deep sweetness and color to the soup.
Strained tomato
Adds acidity and a rounded, savory tang to the finished soup.
Flour
Thickens the soup, giving it a fuller, more body-rich texture.
Browned butter
Adds a nutty, toasted aroma and helps thicken the soup with the flour.

The step that matters

Thicken with flour and browned butter. Flour must be mixed smoothly with the fat before it goes into the liquid; otherwise it clumps and leaves lumps instead of thickening the soup evenly.

Swap the clove
