Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cream of wheat or farina
Thickens the water into a soft, spoonable porridge as its starch gelatinises during cooking.
Butter or hot cream
Adds richness and a smooth, silky mouthfeel to the finished porridge.
Milk sugar
Adds mild sweetness to the porridge.

The step that matters

Cook for 30 minutes after the boil. Starch grains need sustained heat and stirring in liquid to swell and fully gelatinise. Stopping early leaves a grainy, raw-tasting porridge, while the mixture can scorch on the bottom of the pan if it is not stirred.

Swap the raisin

The recipe marks raisin as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, milk, sugar, butter):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Strawberryfits better
  3. Coconutfits better
  4. Raisinthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against cream, milk, sugar, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
