Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Peas
Provide the main body and sweet, tender texture of the dish.
Carrots
Add sweetness, colour and a firmer bite alongside the peas.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that carries flavour and coats the vegetables.

The step that matters

Boil the carrots until tender. Carrots need longer cooking than peas, so adding them after the peas's half-cooked start lets both finish evenly. Undercooked carrots stay hard, while overcooking the peas turns them mushy.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (carrot, butter, parsley, pepper, bread):

  1. Chickpeafits better
  2. Beansfits better
  3. Lentilsfits about as well
  4. Peasthe original
