Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Cover the bottom of a shallow baking dish with apple sauce.

  3. Cut stale bread into ⅓ inch slices and spread with softened butter.

  4. Remove the crusts and cut the bread into triangular pieces.

  5. Arrange the bread closely over the apple sauce.

  6. Sprinkle generously with sugar and add a few drops of vanilla.

  7. Bake in the oven and serve with cream.
