What each ingredient does

Apples
Provide the fruit base, softening and releasing moisture as they bake.
Bread crumbs
Form the layers that soak up apple juices and hold the dish's structure.
Sugar
Sweetens the apples and adds to the caramelised flavour as they bake.
Butter
Greases the dish so the charlotte releases cleanly and adds richness.
