Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main flavour, colour and body of the soup.
Cornflour
Thickens the soup as it boils, giving it a smoother body.
Stock
Supplies the liquid in which the vegetables simmer until tender.

The step that matters

Stirring cornflour into the hot soup. Cornflour mixed with cold water must be stirred into hot soup and then boiled, because starch only thickens fully once it reaches a boil. Adding it to a cold pan or skipping the boil leaves the soup thin or lumpy.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Sweet potatofits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
