Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Form the bulk of the salad and hold their shape when sliced after boiling.
Mayonnaise
Provides fat and creaminess that coat the potato slices and carry the seasonings.
Sweet cream
Thins the dressing so it coats the potatoes evenly and adds richness.
Dry mustard
Adds a sharp, pungent flavor that balances the rich dressing.
Minced onion
Adds sharp aromatic flavor to the dressing.

The step that matters

Shake the potatoes dry before dressing. Any surface water left on the drained potatoes dilutes the mayonnaise-based dressing, making it thin and watery and preventing it from clinging to the slices.

Swap the white pepper

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, mustard, onion, parsley, cream):
