Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Mealy potatoes
Starchy flesh that breaks down into a smooth, thick body when mashed.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a silky mouthfeel.
Milk or cream
Adds dairy fat and body, giving the soup a creamy texture.

The step that matters

Mash the potatoes finely. Potatoes that are not mashed fine enough leave lumps, and the starch must be well broken down so the liquid blends in smoothly. Straining afterward helps catch any remaining fibres or lumps.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, butter, milk):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Parsleyfits better
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against potato, butter, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
