Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Cut and butter enough bread to fill a dish.

  2. Butter the dish and layer the bread, sprinkling currants in between.

  3. Beat together sugar and nutmeg with eggs to make a custard.

  4. Pour the custard over the bread and currants.

  5. Bake in a 350°F (175°C) oven or cook in a bain-marie until set.
