Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Set into soft, tender whites and a runny yolk that forms the topping.
Milk
Provides a gentle, moist poaching liquid that cooks the eggs without boiling them hard.
Butter
Adds richness and flavour to the cracker and helps it brown lightly when toasted.

The step that matters

Remove the pan from the heat before the eggs cook. Milk held at a rolling boil makes egg whites toughen and break apart. Taking the pan off the heat lets the eggs cook gently and stay tender.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, milk, butter):

  1. Nutmegfits better
  2. Cinnamonfits better
  3. Parsleythe original
  4. Tarragonfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, milk, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
