Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chestnuts
Provide the main body and starchy thickness of the soup.
White stock
Forms the liquid base that carries the flavour of the soup.
Cream
Adds richness and a smooth, silky mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Add the cream and heat until hot. Cream is rich in fat and proteins that can split, curdle, or scorch if it is boiled hard, so it should be heated gently once added.

Swap the chestnut

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, pepper):

  1. Chestnutthe original
  2. Pistachiofits about as well
  3. Beansfits about as well
  4. Walnutfits about as well
