Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Vanilla sticks
Provide the main flavor, which is drawn out into the water.
Sugar
Sweetens the ice and lowers its freezing point for a softer texture.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the vanilla and balances the sweetness.

The step that matters

Boil the mixture together. Boiling dissolves the sugar fully into the vanilla water. Undissolved sugar leaves grainy crystals in the frozen ice, so the syrup should be fully clear before straining.

Swap the lemon

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vanilla, sugar):

  1. Figfits better
  2. Blueberryfits better
  3. Peachfits better
  4. Lemonthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against vanilla, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
